2010 will be a very busy year for BBNM. Three new chapters will come online in January. Buddies Jared McDaniel and Abe Assaad will represent Best Buddies at Congress to support the Euncie Kennedy Shriver Act on January 27, our first fundraising gala- the Friendship Ball will be held on February 13 and the first New Mexico Best Buddies Friendship Walk will be held on March 27. Whew!
New Chapters at La Cueva High, Manzano High and Albuquerque High highlight the start of 2010. These chapters replace DeVargas Middle School and Rio Grande High School which decided not to continue their programs due to staff transfers.
The excitement at these schools to establish Best Buddies chapters has been tremendous, both among staff and students.
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver Act will be introduced in Congress this January with bi-partisan support. The Bill will provide support to Best Buddies AND Special Olympics in all 50 states.
To help highlight the need for the legislation Buddy Ambassadors Jared McDaniel will represent BBNM while Buddy Ambassador Abe Assaad will represent Special Olympics.
The 2010 budget does not have any government funds, making the locally based fundraising efforts critical to BBNM. Two fundraising events are scheduled for the first quarter to fund programs for the entire year. BBNM needs to raise $100,000 from these two events.
The first is our Friendship Ball, featuring Actress Maureen McCormick and Actor Bill Daily with MC Jeremy Jojola and Music by the Chris Dracup Band. The Committee is finalizing details, arranging auction items and selling tickets. (The food tasting was tremendous with succulent prime rib, salmon and a vegetarian dish that was fabulous).

Friendship Walk will be held at Kit Carson Park on March 27, 2010. Corporate, Family Chapter teams as well as individuals are invited. There are no registration fees, nor fundraising minimums required so everyone can participate. However, prizes will be awarded (T-shirts, Sweatshirts, to an IPOD) based on individual and team fundraising.
